Wat Benchamabophit – The Marble Temple In Bangkok, Thailand

The Marble Temple (also known as Wat Benchamabophit) is one of the most popular and famous temples in Bangkok, Thailand.

This exemplifies Thai architecture with its distinctive pointy layered rooftops and white Singha lion statues standing guard at the doorways.

While Bangkok is home to numerous temples, this one truly shines as a standout landmark in the country.

This guide to The Marble Temple  will provide insights on how to reach the temple, current entrance fees, dress code requirements, and all essential information you need for your visit!

Exploring Wat Benchamapophit

Wat Benchamabophit, known as the “Marble Temple,” showcases stunning Italian marble in its construction.

Established in 1899 by the Thai king, this Buddhist temple boasts a rich history of over 120 years.

This temple forms part of a vast temple complex situated alongside a canal, offering various free-to-visit buildings to explore and admire.

Dress Code

When visiting the temple grounds at The Marble Temple , there is no specific dress code. However, to enter the main temple, both men and women must adhere to a strict dress code.

It is essential to ensure that clothing covers your knees and shoulders; failure to comply will result in denied entry, as they enforce this policy strictly.

While shorts are acceptable as long as they reach the knees, visitors can also purchase affordable sarongs on-site to meet the requirements. This was a solution that proved useful for my companion during our visit.

Entrance Fees

While most of the temple grounds can be explored for free, a 50 Baht entrance fee is required to enter the main temple.

Be cautious and double-check your change, as there have been reports of dishonest staff returning incorrect change and keeping some money for themselves.

How To Reach Wat Benchamabophit

Wat Benchamabophit is situated in the central Dusit district of Bangkok.

The most convenient way to reach the temple is by using the Grab app to find a driver. Fares are affordable, and there is a high availability of drivers in the area.

Alternatively, you can opt for a day tour that covers multiple locations in Bangkok. Consider booking a private guided tour that includes a visit to the marble temple along with two other renowned temples in the city.
Optimal Time to Explore

There is no unfavorable time to explore Bangkok, although the wettest period spans from May to October, while the sunniest months are from November to March.

However, we had a delightful week in Bangkok during August without experiencing any rain, proving that visiting during the rainy season can still be enjoyable!

The ideal time to visit Bangkok’s temples is in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds.

Where We Stayed

We lodged at ninaguesthouse in Bangkok and spent $27 USD on a comfortable double room equipped with cold A/C, hot shower, and reliable WiFi.

Although not the most budget-friendly option during our Thailand journey, the location was superb. Just a 3-minute stroll away was the bustling Khao San Road, surrounded by numerous quality eateries and shops.

In addition, all the major temples on our itinerary were conveniently accessible by foot or a short Grab ride. Be mindful that prices may vary, so it’s advisable to watch out for favorable deals.
