What Is The World Traveler?
The Bugs Cafe was established by a French expat and a Khmer chef, blending local Cambodian culture with the influx of tourists drawn to the renowned Angkor Wat temples, attracting millions of visitors to Siem Reap annually.
Traditionally, Cambodian locals have been consuming tarantulas as a delicacy, a practice that may stem from the hardships faced during the Khmer Rouge regime when food scarcity was prevalent.
Even today, tarantulas continue to be a part of the cuisine, offering tourists a unique and intriguing culinary experience.
It’s truly a one-of-a-kind restaurant that you won’t find anywhere else!
The Menu At The Bugs Cafe
Here is a glimpse of some of the offerings from the menu:
Hakuna Matata? Intriguing, isn’t it? I decided to try an insect skewer (featuring a large scorpion and water bug) and the tarantula donut.
Usually, this includes 3 bug skewers and 3 tarantulas, but the waitstaff kindly allowed me to order one of each (one scorpion skewer and one tarantula) at half the regular price. I wasn’t up for having three of these consecutively.
The staff at The Bugs Cafe are humorous and welcoming, ready to assist you with any menu queries or soothe any apprehensions about consuming bugs.
Bug kabob + tarantula melt. Delicious.
The marinated tarantula is coated in tempura and fried deeply. It was peculiar but not as unpleasant as I imagined; the crust masks the fact that you’re eating a tarantula.
The scorpion was challenging, and I couldn’t manage to finish it. It was extremely crunchy, notably the claws, resembling chewing on rocks. The stiff and unpleasant hairs on the scorpion tail were also off-putting.
I had no desire to even attempt the large water bug. Unlike consuming a tarantula or scorpion that grants boasting rights, saying “I ate a water bug” isn’t particularly appealing.
Deep fried tarantula. Crispy and satisfying.
Bug kabob, with a grilled scorpion, spider, and large water bug.
I must acknowledge that the restaurant is efficiently run and the chefs clearly exhibit their expertise. The presentation and execution of the dishes are excellent. One visit was sufficient for me, but their creativity is undeniable! 🙂
