Despite the crowds, this location remains one of Bali’s most captivating rice terraces, especially when visited during optimal months, displaying an unparalleled vibrancy of green hues!

The Tegallalang rice terraces (also known as the Ceking terrace, or Tegallalang) utilize Bali’s ancient Subak irrigation system, with rice paddies organized in descending layers.

Once you’ve captured photos from above, there is a pathway that allows you to descend into the valley and observe the terraces up close.

The path may appear easier than it actually is, and in my view, the most stunning views are from the top. Therefore, if you’re not up for hiking, you can skip it.

However, I recommend allocating at least an hour to explore the area, or more if you wish to delve deeper into the surroundings.

Jungle Swings

The Tegalalang rice terrace features various swings available for a fee, offering picturesque backgrounds for capturing moments.

Personally, I find the artificial swings and accessories distasteful as they detract from the natural beauty of the landscape. While one swing may be acceptable, the abundance of them seems excessive to me. It’s quite unbelievable.

This location is experiencing rapid overdevelopment, which is regrettable (further details will be discussed later).

*The Tegallalang rice terraces does not have a formal entrance fee at Tegalalang, but some farmers may request a small donation to pass through their fields. Please have some small change ready, and do not exceed 10k Rupiah in donations.

Best Time To Visit

The Tegalalang rice terrace is most vibrant just before the harvest season, typically in March/April and September/October. February also offers a pleasant sight with newly planted rice fields flooded with water.

The optimal time to explore is early in the morning, preferably before sunrise, when the soft light filters through the palm trees. This timing not only allows you to enjoy the serenity but also avoids the midday heat and crowds.

Are There Snakes At Tegalalang?

While there may be snakes at the Tegalalang rice terrace, they generally avoid contact with humans, so encountering them is unlikely.

During numerous visits to Tegalalang over the years, there have been no sightings of snakes, and incidents of tourists being bitten are unheard of, despite the high foot traffic in the area.

There is no need to be overly concerned. Just be mindful of your surroundings while walking, and you should be safe. If you do happen to encounter a snake in Bali, it is best to keep your distance and approach with caution. Bali snakes should be treated with respect.

Issues with Overdevelopment

Let’s discuss the problem of overdevelopment at Tegalalang, which is rapidly turning into a crowded tourist destination.

Although my photographs may not fully capture this, the increasing presence of tree swings, sidewalks, shops, and excessive props is making it challenging to capture the beauty of the area.

The once picturesque Ceking rice field no longer resembles its former self from my visit in 2017. The authentic charm of Tegalalang depicted in postcards has faded over time.

What was once a scenic and iconic natural location has transformed into what can be described as a strange and gaudy theme park. The proliferation of swings is particularly concerning. What has caused this transformation?

It is crucial for the Balinese government to step in and safeguard this precious location before it becomes even more commercialized. While it may not be beyond saving yet, urgent action is needed to prevent further deterioration.

To support conservation efforts, it is advisable to refrain from using the swings or participating in zip lines. Avoiding the local restaurants can also prevent further construction and commercialization in the already congested rice terraces.

Tegalalang used to be a highlight of Bali’s natural beauty. Let’s work together to preserve it and explore alternative swing locations in Bali that offer equally stunning views.
