As part of the Cyclades group of Greek islands, Santorini stands out as the most renowned and popular destination, not just within the group but also across Greece as a whole!

Originating from volcanic activity, Santorini still features natural hot springs and remnants of its volcanic past, especially evident in the caldera area, making it intriguing for visitors to explore.

How To Travel to Santorini Greece

Santorini can be accessed by either plane or ferry.

Flying to Santorini is the most convenient, quickest, and more costly (yet advisable) way to reach the island. The Santorini airport (JTR) offers daily nonstop flights from Athens, as well as select international cities like Frankfurt, London, and Rome.

The flight duration from Athens to Santorini is 45 minutes, with ticket prices ranging from 50 to 100 Euros for a one-way journey with carriers like Aegean/Olympic Air or Sky Express.

It is preferable to choose Aegean (or its subsidiary Olympic Air) over Sky Express if feasible, although all options are suitable. Generally, checked baggage is included in the ticket fares.

Traveling to Santorini via ferry from Athens is slightly more economical than by air, but entails a more complex and lengthier journey.

Initially, you must travel to the ports at Piraeus or Rafina and board the ferry from there. Prices range from 50 to 90 Euros based on your selection. The fast ferries take about 5 hours to reach Santorini, while the slower ones can take over 8 hours.

If you wish to engage in island hopping in Greece and explore beyond Santorini, you can modify your itinerary accordingly.

Exploring Santorini, Mykonos, and Athens: A Greek Island Adventure

When planning a trip to Greece, consider flying into Santorini for a few days, then taking a ferry to Mykonos, and finally flying back to Athens. This itinerary offers a great way to experience the beauty and charm of these iconic Greek islands.

Begin your journey in Santorini, known for its stunning sunsets, picturesque villages, and crystal-clear waters. Explore the white-washed buildings of Oia, relax on the black sand beaches of Perissa, and sample delicious local cuisine overlooking the Aegean Sea.

From Santorini, take a leisurely ferry ride to Mykonos, famous for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and charming windmills. Stroll through the narrow streets of Mykonos Town, relax on the golden sands of Paradise Beach, and experience the island’s unique blend of cosmopolitan charm and traditional architecture.

After enjoying the best of both Santorini and Mykonos, fly back to Athens to explore the ancient history and modern culture of the Greek capital. Visit the iconic Acropolis, wander through the bustling Plaka neighborhood, and sample delicious street food in Monastiraki Square.

By following this itinerary, you can experience the diverse beauty, history, and charm of Santorini, Mykonos, and Athens, creating unforgettable memories of your Greek island adventure.

Transport: Exploring Santorini

While towns like Oia and Fira are easily walkable for restaurants and local activities, venturing further around Santorini requires transportation.

The bus system on the island is a cost-effective way to travel, with convenient stops at key locations, mainly centered around Fira. It’s a popular option during the bustling summer months, but services may be limited during the quieter off-peak season.

For short distances or town transfers, taxi services are available in lieu of Uber. Consider reputable options like Welcome Pickups for reliable airport transfers.

Alternatively, renting a car or ATV (4 wheeler) is a popular choice among visitors to explore Santorini. Numerous car rental companies operate on the island, with recommendations for services like DiscoverCars.

Driving around Santorini can be a bit tense due to limited parking availability, despite generally well-maintained roads across the small island.

Town Driving Challenges

One of the challenges faced by drivers is navigating through towns with heavy traffic and narrow roads lined with parked cars. It is important to drive cautiously at a slow speed in these areas and stay vigilant to ensure safe travel.

Smooth Roads Outside Towns

Once you leave the town behind, the roads generally become much easier to drive on, providing a smoother and more relaxed driving experience without the congested traffic and tight spaces.

Greek Driving Tips

Greeks drive on the right side of the road, similar to the US and Canada. The locals have a tendency to drive fast, often disregarding speed limits and passing on double yellow lines. It is advisable to be mindful of this behavior and yield to them when necessary.

New Driving Regulations

As of 2021, tourists from Australia, Canada, UK, and the United States are no longer required to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Greece. The details of this updated law can be found in Law 4850, art. 25, par. η, page 10697, and have also been verified by the U.S. Embassy in Greece. However, it is still recommended to carry an IDP for Santorini to avoid any confusion with local authorities or rental car companies, as many individuals in Greece may not be aware of this recent change.

Santorini Greece Travel Guide & Best Things To Do

On our first visit to Santorini, we predominantly used the bus for transportation on the island and only rented a car for a few days to access remote areas that are not easily reachable by bus. This method worked well.

If driving in Santorini is not your preference and dealing with the bus schedule is also not ideal, you can explore the island through a private or shared tour.

Additional Recommendations for Santorini

Is Santorini Safe?

Indeed, Santorini offers a safe environment for visitors, extending beyond the resort areas. Our extensive exploration of the island for weeks revealed a secure atmosphere throughout.

Greece boasts one of the lowest homicide rates globally, ensuring a peaceful setting for travelers. By adhering to standard safety measures, one can enjoy a worry-free experience without concerns about crime.

Having visited Santorini as a couple, our positive encounter prompts the consideration of a return trip as a solo traveler, devoid of any apprehensions.

Santorini On A Budget — Is It Possible?

Contrary to popular belief, Santorini can be enjoyed on a budget, dispelling the myth that it is only for the ultra-wealthy. While you may not indulge in luxury accommodations with sprawling infinity pools and ocean views, there are still ways to experience the beauty of Santorini without breaking the bank.

During our initial trip to Santorini, we opted to stay in the more affordable area of Perissa, located near the beach. Utilizing the cost-effective public bus system, we were able to explore popular areas such as Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli conveniently.

Although our accommodations were not in upscale neighborhoods, we found it easy to access these areas for sightseeing and capturing memorable photographs. To explore more remote locations that were challenging to reach by bus, we opted to rent a car for a few days.

In Perissa, we savored delicious meals priced as low as 3 Euros per person and secured a room at Studios Apartments Kapetanios for 65 Euros per day. While not exorbitantly cheap, these costs were reasonable considering the location and convenience.

It is worth noting that our visit occurred during a popular summer month (September) in a year that witnessed heightened tourism in Greece (2022). Consequently, there is potential to achieve even more cost savings compared to our experience.

With careful planning and strategic budgeting, it is indeed feasible to explore Santorini without overspending. It all comes down to smart choices and maximizing value during your travel experience!
