Pura Lempuyang Temple In Bali: The Gates Of Heaven
The Pura Lempuyang Temple in Bali has gained popularity on the internet due to its iconic ‘Gates of Heaven’, which create a stunning frame with the sky and Mount Agung volcano.
Aside from being a sought-after spot for Instagram photos, the Lempuyang Temple holds significant historical and cultural value as one of Bali’s oldest and most respected temples.
Even for those not interested in social media, a visit to this temple is highly recommended as there is much more to explore beyond the famous ‘heaven’s gate’.
Pura Lempuyang Temple
The Pura Lempuyang Temple is located on the mountainside of Mount Lempuyang in Bali, offering stunning views of the distant Mount Agung volcano, accentuated by the renowned ‘Gates of Heaven’ stone entrance.
Despite its picturesque setting, the temple is a popular tourist destination, attracting large crowds daily. Due to the influx of visitors, a queuing system has been implemented, resulting in long wait times of over an hour for photos at the gate.
For visitors seeking tranquility, there are seven temples within the Lempuyang complex that can be reached through a hike up the slope. These temples offer splendid views of Mount Agung, although they may not be as iconic as the first gate.
While completing the full loop hike to all the temples can take several hours, the main temple with the famous gate and staircase is easily accessible with just a 5-minute walk from the parking area at Pura Lempuyang.
Pura Lempuyang Temple In Bali: The Gates Of Heaven
During my first visit to Lempuyang in 2017 as a solo traveler, the temple was nearly empty with only a few locals present. I was the sole tourist there at the time. However, the influence of social media has quickly transformed the situation.
Returning to Lempuyang during the 2020 Covid pandemic, when Indonesia’s borders were closed, and most tourists had left the country, provided another rare opportunity to experience the temple without the usual crowds.
Known as one of Bali’s holiest Hindu temples, Lempuyang is also renowned for its stunning beauty, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. The staircase leading to the temple, for instance, offers a picturesque backdrop for photos.

The Mirror Trick
Images circulating on Instagram often depict a picturesque scene at this location, showcasing the gate and clouds reflecting perfectly, giving the illusion of the ‘Gates of Heaven’ appearing over water.
However, the reality is a bit different as there is no actual water body present at this site. These stunning reflection photos are created using a clever trick involving a small mirror. A local individual stationed there efficiently takes these photos for visitors by utilizing the mirror, providing a similar experience for all visitors.
Despite the artificial nature of the reflections, the resulting photos still look breathtaking and captivating. Therefore, it is worth participating in this photo opportunity, and if you find the local individual’s assistance valuable in capturing beautiful shots, consider showing appreciation by giving a small tip.
Lempuyang Shuttle
A new shuttle bus system has been implemented at Lempuyang starting in 2022 to alleviate crowding and traffic issues on the narrow and winding roads leading to the temple.
The temple’s existing parking lot lacks sufficient space to accommodate more vehicles, prompting the introduction of the shuttle service, albeit with an additional cost for visitors.
Passengers can avail of the shuttle service through a minibus at a cost of 50k Rupiah for a round trip, equivalent to 25k Rupiah per direction. The journey is relatively short, spanning only 5 to 10 minutes.
Optimal Timing for Visiting
To capture stunning photos, it is advisable to visit Lempuyang Temple before sunrise, ensuring Mount Agung is unobscured by clouds. However, be prepared to face crowds by arriving around 5 or 5:30 AM as many other tourists flock to the site at that time. The temple welcomes visitors from 5:30 AM.
Alternatively, for a more peaceful experience and still obtain beautiful pictures, consider visiting in the afternoon once the Instagram crowds have dwindled, allowing for a more serene visit.
Entrance Fee
Previously, visitors to Lempuyang Temple could enter without an entrance fee and instead make a voluntary donation.
However, as of 2022, the entrance fee for Pura Lempuyang is now 55k Rupiah per person, which includes a sarong and assistance from locals for taking photos at the famous gate. While tips are not mandatory, they are suggested if the person assisting you takes many good pictures.
Additionally, a new fee has been introduced for using the shuttle bus to reach the parking area, costing 50k Rupiah roundtrip. This fee is separate from the main entrance fee.
This change in pricing signifies that Lempuyang Temple is no longer considered budget-friendly by Bali standards, likely due to increased popularity and visitor numbers.

How To Reach Lempuyang Temple
Lempuyang Temple can be found in Karangasem, situated in the far eastern region of Bali, Indonesia.
The ideal location to stay for easy access to the temple is on the Amed coast, as it is just a 30-minute drive away. Starting from popular tourist destinations like Ubud and Canggu in southern Bali will require a longer 2-hour journey to reach Lempuyang.
The most convenient way to reach the temple is by either renting a scooter or booking a private car with a driver (both services available for online reservation).

Bali Private Driver & Motorbike Rental
If you wish to discover Bali comfortably and securely in a private vehicle with an English-speaking chauffeur, my top suggestion would be GetYourGuide.
Their rates commence at 700k Rupiah (~$48 USD) for a full day of exploration and sightseeing in Bali (up to 10 hours) for 1-5 passengers. This price includes the entire package of the car, driver, and fuel, making it a fantastic bargain. They also provide economical hotel transfers from the airport.
If you prefer traveling by motorbike, they also offer this option. Their scooter rentals start at 140k Rupiah (~$9) and come with a helmet, raincoat, and complimentary delivery in the southern Bali region.
We have utilized GetYourGuide for numerous tours and activities worldwide, and they consistently deliver excellent service. Highly recommended.
The Best Way to Explore Bali: Private Driver or Scooter Rental?
When visiting Bali, exploring the island is a must to truly appreciate its beauty and culture. One of the best ways to get around Bali is by hiring a private driver or renting a scooter. Both options offer unique experiences and advantages, but which one is the best choice for you?
Benefits of Hiring a Private Driver
Opting for a private driver in Bali provides convenience and comfort. You can sit back and relax while the driver navigates the often busy and chaotic roads. A knowledgeable driver can also serve as a guide, offering insights into local attractions and hidden gems that you might otherwise miss. With a private driver, you have the flexibility to create your own itinerary and explore Bali at your own pace.
Advantages of Renting a Scooter
On the other hand, renting a scooter in Bali allows for a more adventurous and independent exploration of the island. You can easily weave through traffic, reach remote areas, and experience the thrill of riding along picturesque roads. Scooters are also a cost-effective option for budget-conscious travelers who prefer the freedom to travel on their terms.
Which Option is Right for You?
Ultimately, the choice between hiring a private driver or renting a scooter depends on your preferences and travel style. If you value convenience, comfort, and local insights, a private driver might be the best option for you. On the other hand, if you seek adventure, independence, and cost-effectiveness, renting a scooter could be the ideal choice. Regardless of your decision, both options offer unforgettable experiences that will enhance your Bali vacation. So, book now and discover the magic of Bali!
What To Wear To Temples In Bali
When visiting temples in Bali, it is essential to wear a sarong, which is a traditional skirt tied around the waist. These sarongs can typically be rented on-site for a nominal fee, such as 5,000 Rupiah (less than one US Dollar). However, some temples include the sarong for free in the ticket price, so it is essential to check beforehand.
