One of the most favored spots for taking pictures is the crimson bridge situated on the western side of the moat.

Photographers often gather around the iconic red bridge, providing excellent photo opportunities. Heading west from here, you won’t find an entrance but will discover beautiful spots for capturing the moat.

Alternatively, heading east leads to a gate that opens into the main castle grounds. Inside, visitors can explore a gift shop, a spacious courtyard, and enjoy additional picturesque views of the castle from below.

How To Reach Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle is situated in the Nagano prefecture of Japan.

To get there from Tokyo or other parts of Japan, you can utilize the bus or rail network. While the journey is quite long at around 3-4 hours each way, it is not overly challenging.

The most economical way is to opt for the bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal, which takes approximately 3.5 hours one way and costs ¥3,800 (~$35).

Upon exiting Matsumoto Station, the castle is just a brief 5-minute stroll away.

Optimal Time for your Visit

If you’re planning to visit Matsumoto Castle, the prime months are from late March to mid-April.

The initial two weeks of April are particularly bustling due to the cherry blossom season. Additionally, Golden Week in the first week of May sees a surge in visitors because of the holidays.

From my perspective, the castle holds its charm throughout the year, so consider visiting when the crowds are less dense. I went in January, and although the lake was partially frozen, I had the castle mostly to myself.

It’s important to note that tickets cannot be reserved in advance. Hence, during peak seasons, it’s advisable to arrive early in the morning to secure your tickets.
