The Nara Park is home to over 1,000 deer that freely wander the area, making them easy to spot!

These deer are considered semi-wild but are quite friendly. The park provides special stands where visitors can purchase a pack of nutritious crackers for 200 Yen to hand-feed the deer.

Interestingly, some of the deer in the park have learned to bow their heads as a gesture, almost like they are bowing, to receive the crackers! It’s a charming display of manners even among the animal residents.

To make the most out of the experience, it is recommended to break the crackers into smaller pieces so they last longer, allowing for more interaction and photo opportunities.

Once the crackers are finished, it’s advisable to show the deer your empty hands to signal that all the food is gone. This helps prevent any potential pushing or aggressive behavior from the deer.

While we personally didn’t encounter any aggressive deer behavior during our two visits to Nara, incidents can occur, leading to potential harm. As a precaution, avoid teasing the deer by hiding food or holding it out of reach, as this may agitate them.

From Osaka, commence your journey at Namba Station and then embark on a 45-minute eastward ride on the Kintetsu lines.

We opted for a stay at Hotel Mikado in Osaka priced at 4,000 Yen ($30 USD). This budget-friendly option is ideal for solo travelers or couples exploring Japan.

Our accommodation included a tidy private room equipped with heating/air conditioning, a fridge, television, and high-speed WiFi. While the room was cozy albeit on the smaller side, the shared bathrooms are standard in Japanese hotels.

Conveniently situated just a brief 2-minute stroll from dining options and train stations, the hotel also offered easy access to popular attractions like Osaka Castle and the bustling Dotonbori shopping street, reachable in a short 15-minute train ride. Additionally, we were able to embark on day trips to Himeji, Kyoto, and Nara from this central location.
