History Of Kasteel De Haar

The construction of Kasteel De Haar may seem medieval, but the majority of the castle was actually built in the 19th century. It replaced ancient castle ruins dating back to 1391.

Originally owned by the De Haar family until 1440, the castle eventually came into the possession of the Van Zuylen family through marriage. Between 1892 and 1912, the Van Zuylens enlisted the talents of Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers to undertake a complete reconstruction and modernization of the castle, resulting in the stunning masterpiece that stands today.

During the 1960s, Kasteel De Haar became a social hub for the Van Zuylen family, hosting numerous international celebrities like Brigitte Bardot, Gregory Peck, Joan Collins, Roger Moore, and Michael Caine.

In the year 2000, ownership of the castle and its gardens was transferred to the Kasteel de Haar foundation by the Van Zuylen family. However, they retained the right to spend one month a year in the castle, a tradition they still uphold annually. What a privilege!

While my wife lamented missing the renowned tulip season in the Netherlands during our trip, the August flora at De Haar Castle proved to be a splendid alternative.

The most favorable time of day to explore the castle is in the early morning, coinciding with the park’s opening at 9 AM. This early visit allows for a quieter experience, with fewer crowds. During our summer morning excursion, we relished the tranquility for an hour or two, feeling as if the estate belonged solely to us!

It is advisable to allocate 2 to 3 hours for a thorough exploration of the castle and its surroundings, contingent upon your pace and the seasonal bloom within the gardens. On average, most visitors typically complete the tour within 2 hours.
