Camping

Preceding dinner, we enjoyed a refreshing soak in the creek to cleanse ourselves and cool down post the jungle hike. The crystal-clear water stream provided the perfect respite from the tropical humidity.

The camping setup is basic, comprising a small 2-person tent placed inside a larger bamboo shelter for the guides and cooks to stay in.

The following morning, post-trek, your Bukit Lawang guide will offer you the option of either hiking back to town or going rafting on inner-tubes. While we initially chose not to do the rafting, in hindsight, we regret that decision.

For dinner, we enjoyed Indonesian dishes like chicken curry, perkedel (potato cakes), fried fish with rice, and assorted vegetables. Breakfast offerings resembled lunch but included the choice of tea or coffee.

We recommend not worrying too much about the timing of your visit. Given its rainforest nature, Bukit Lawang receives rainfall throughout the year. However, the least rainy periods are usually in February, March, June, and July, although precipitation levels remain higher compared to other regions like Bali.

Our visit in December proved ideal for trekking as the rain typically falls in the evenings or at night, lasting only a few hours at most.
